Democrats and Obama cannot understand that raising taxes on anyone at this point of the financial crisis is a huge mistake. It says to the legislature that we don't have to cut so much spending because we have new revenue to cover it. It is a stop gap method and it will reduce worker spending, which will cost jobs. Adding more revenue to cover more spending is the opposite of what you want to do. You want to freeze taxes and take a machete to the spending.
Tax and spending is what got us into this situation. Only severe spending cuts can move the government in the direction of solvency. Adding taxes just complicates the process. You cannot solve our spending problem by raising taxes it will just make thing worse.
